Learn how to perform the new, "hands-only" method of CPR

FREE training at community Pump-A-Thon*

SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 12:30 - 1 PM -- Centennial Park, Ellicott City. Members of the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services (HCDFRS) will provide the public with free, hands-on training  in the American Hospital Association's (AHA) new method of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which does not require mouth-to-mouth or rescue breaths. Howard County Office of Children’s Services offers resource and referral service

THE CARE CENTER FOR CHILD AND ADOLESCENT RESOURCESprovides free assistance to Howard County parents to help them find services and programs in the community for children and teens. CARE Center staff will work with families to identify needs and offer resource and referral information to help find solutions to questions and concerns. Resource and referral information is available for topics including

• community services
• county recreation and sports
• financial assistance
• support groups
• intensive needs services
• drug or alcohol abuse
• youth development
• child development classes for parents
• positive discipline and parenting
• school readiness and achievement
• concerns about emotional and mental health
• difficult behavior
• child care programs and many others.

NOW THROUGH early June,  Maryland law enforcement officers officers are enforcing the state's seat belt laws as part of Maryland Highway Safety Office's "Choose Safety for Life/Click it or Ticket" campaign. Drivers who are stopped and found to not be wearing seat belts will receive a $25 ticket for their first offense. More in this  MAY 11 Columbia Patch article.

Collision Avoidance Training (CAT) class for licensed teens, young adults

FRIDAY, MAY 18, 6 -9 PM & SATURDAY, MAY 19, 8 AM - 4 PM-- James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center, Marriottsville. "Power of Parents" handbook (FREE)

MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING (MADD) offers a FREE, research-based parent handbook* containing eye-opening facts about teen alcohol use and ways to effectively talk to teens about underage drinking. Visit MADD's "Power of Parents" website to sign up to receive an e-mail version of the handbook.

*  Based on Dr. Robert Turrisi's successful program for parents of college students, the Power of Parents handbook has been adapted for parents of high school students; follow-up research has shown that, when parents read and used the handbook to talk to their high school students, there was a 30% reduction in the teens' underage drinking.
