WHEN IT COMES TO ranking the nation's most challenging high schools (click here for Post article), Centennial High School comes in at #422 out of 1,898 schools surveyed nationwide, and 51st out of 177 Washington, D.C.-area schools surveyed.

Professional Graduation photos and podium candids, professional Graduation Ceremony DVDs

PROFESSIONAL-QUALITY Graduation "action shots" (photographs of  each CHS senior crossing the stage to receive diplomas, and more) will be available for purchase from Candid Color Photography following the CHS Graduation at Merriweather Post Pavilion on THURSDAY, JUNE 24. After the Big Day, you can preview and purchase your individual photographs online by logging on to the Candid Color website (www.candidcolor.net) and using the Centennial High School access code: CENG12.

Professional-quality Graduation Ceremony DVDs can be purchased from HCPSS by using this mail-in form.

In addition to producing graduation ceremony DVDs for purchase, the HCPSS Television Services Department will use their video production trailer to broadcast each of the county's 12 graduation ceremonies live on the large screens at Merriweather Post Pavilion; will webcast each graduation ceremony via the Internet; and will broadcast the ceremonies on cable TV channels.

Keep math skills sharp during summer months

THE HCPSS OFFICE OF SECONDARY MATHEMATICS offers summer workbooks for students wishing to keep math skills sharp during the summer months. The workbooks are designed to provide practice with skills featured in Mathematics courses that middle andhigh school students will take in the Fall. Currently, there are workbooks for all Grade 6, 7, 8, Algebra I and Algebra II courses. (Geometry has not been developed.) The summer Mathematics workbooks can be accessed by visiting www.hcpss.org/parents/parent_tips.shtml#summer. Hammering out the shared-use agreement for use of high school artificial turf fields

A DRAFT VERSION of a shared-use agreement for high school artificial turf fields was presented at a Board of Education (BOE) public hearing on Thursday. This Howard County Times article ("Changes urged to agreement on school artificial turf fields", MAY 10) informs about the impact that the proposed shared-use agreement would have on scheduling use of  the artificial turf fields by high school athletic teams (practices, games), non-athletic school groups (marching bands), as well as concerns about high school parking lot issues.

The article announces two (2) upcoming community meetings about the shared-use agreement: TOMORROW (TUESDAY, MAY 15, 6 PM at Glenelg High School; and THURSDAY, MAY 17, 7 PM at Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks headquarters. The BOE is scheduled to vote on the agreement NEXT TUESDAY (MAY 22).

Parent volunteers needed for Financial Literacy simulation exercise

THURSDAY, MAY 17, 7: 15 - 9:15 AM  and/or 1:15 - 2:15 PM -- Cafeteria. In keeping with the requirements of the  school system's Financial Literacy Instructional Program, Centennial High School will host a Financial Literacy Simulation Exercise designed to enhance students' understanding of financial concepts -- including the process of developing a personal or household budget. The event will be sponsored in part by Junior Achievement (JA) of Central Maryland. 

Armed with personal "budgets," students in Government classes will visit various financial "stations" set up in the Cafeteria and will "pay" for certain essential services, i.e. housing, automobile insurance, utilities, etc. Students will learn how to manage -- and stay within -- their budgets in order to obtain these necessary services.

Parents and guardians, can you come to CHS to help with this event for one or two  hours in the morning, and/or for one hour  in the afternoon, next Thursday (May 17)?

Proposed school instructional materials on display

THROUGH THURSDAY, MAY 17 -- HCPSS Department of Education, Ellicott City and the Howard County Library, Central Branch, Columbia. Instructional materials recommended for use in the Howard County Public School System for the first time will be on display for citizen review. More information in this HCPSS news release.
