2012-2013 Young Women's Giving Circle accepting applications

THE Women's Giving Circle (WGC) of Howard County is looking for its next group of young women leaders. The WGC's  Young Women's Giving Circle (YWGC) is a  group of high school age girls who have a strong passion for philanthropy with the mission of promoting the wellness of women and girls in the Howard County community. "It's Academic" quizbowl team news

CHS "IT'S ACADEMIC" TEAM Captain Matt Keimig, Miles Young, Nancy Zhang and Team Alternate Aneesh Agrawal traveled to WJZ TV-13 on Saturday, April 14 to tape a winning "It's Academic" playoff  match; Centennial won the match with a final score of 595 points against quizbowl teams from Calvert Hall (460 points) and Atholton (300 points) high schools. Tune in to the "It's Academic" Show"on WJZ -TV Channel 13/Baltimore on SATURDAY, MAY 26 at 10 AM to watch our school's team perform and to see the CHS Cheerleaders cheer them on to victory. 

Of the original 81 high school teams competingin the quizbowl program, 72 have been eliminated; CHS now is one of the "Elite Nine." The next television taping for the "It's Academic" Semifinal and Final matches takes place this Saturday, April 21, the day of the CHS Junior-Senior Prom.

HCEA Spring Arts & Crafts Bazaar

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 4 - 6 PM -- The Homewood School, Ellicott City. FREE event sponsored by the Howard County Education Association (HCEA) to raise funds for the Help-A-Child Fund, HCEA's joint charitable project with the HCPSS Pupil Personnel Workers (PPW) which provides  new clothing, coats, shoes, eyeglasses and more for Howard County students in need.

"We Are One" free cultural showcase to support children in Somalia (UNICEF)

FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 7 PM -- Auditorium. At this intercultural charity show sponsored by Centennial High School's  Kidz4Kids Club, you'll be entertained by

--   Martial Arts demonstrations                          --   Classical dancing
--   Belly dancing                                                              --   African dance and drumming
--   Performances by CHS music students     --   and more!
--   Bollywood dancing

Refreshments will be available and there will be informational displays about different cultures and countries to review.

Admission is FREE but donations will be accepted to support UNICEF Child Survival Programs in Somalia, which provide health and hygiene, nutrition, water supply, sanitation and basic education programs to a famine-ridden region of Africa now experiencing the worst drought in 60 years. CHS Science Olympiad Team takes First Place

THE CHS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM took First Place in the Maryland Science Olympiad Tournament held at Johns Hopkins University on SUNDAY, MARCH 31. According to CHS Biology Instructor and Team sponsor Mr. Jason Piluk, the competition amongst twelve high school teams participating in the Tournament was fierce; click here to see results.

Centennial's team earned gold medals in 11 out of the 23 events including Dynamic Planet, Forestry, Gravity Vehicle, Helicopter, Protein Modeling, Remote Sensing, Robot Arm, Rocks & Minerals, Technical Problem Solving, Tower Building and Water Quality. The contributions of each and every student mattered because, in the end, they beat out their closest competition by only one point, i.e. the difference between a Gold and a Bronze medal.

With their triumph at the state level, Centennial's Team has earned the right to compete in the National Science Olympiad in Florida in May.

 

 

 

"It's Academic" news

THE CHS "IT'S ACADEMIC" TEAM traveled to Arundel High School this weekend to compete in a quizbowl tournament against 12 other teams and CHS' "A" team, comprised of junior Matt Keimig (Captain), senior Miles Young, sophomore Nancy Zhang and "freshman phenom" Ryan Heslin, won a trophy for Third Place. The "B" Team, comprised of  junior Clarissa Santori (Captain), sophomore Qian Mei, sophomore Hua Zhou, and another "freshman phenom" Anant Mishra, took Fourth Place.

Some weeks ago, the CHS "It's Academic" team placed Fourth out of 24 teams at a National History Bowl Regional Tournament, thus qualifying to compete in the 2012 National History Bowl Championships in Washington, D.C., in April.  Also, the team placed Sixth out of 32 teams from four neighboring states and the District of Columbia at the St. Anselm's Abbey School (Washington, D.C.) Novice Tournament in October.

CHS "It's Academic" team wins

CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL'S "IT'S ACADEMIC" team traveled to WJZ TV-13 studios on Saturday to tape the academic quizbowl program of the same name and came home triumphant with a 545-point victory over Loch Raven (340 points) and McDonogh (320 points) high schools. CONGRATULATIONS to the team: Matt Keimig*, Miles Young and Nancy Zhang, and alternates Qian Mei and Clarissa Santori. * (Matt served as Team Captain in place of Aneesh Agrawal, who out-of-state at a STEM competition.)

TUNE IN to WJZ-TV13 on SATURDAY, MARCH 17 at 10 AM to see the CHS  "It's Academic" team rack up the points, cheered on by CHS cheerleaders and CHS Principal Dr. Carl Perkins, who accompanied the team to the televised taping. The team's next taping at WJZ TV-13 will be a playoff match on SATURDAY, APRIL 14.

Coached by Dr. Eric Seifter, the CHS "It's Academic" club has 35 members who compete on weekends throughout the year. The Club thanks Centennial Boosters for their financial support and thanks the team members and Club parents for their hard work.
