Congratulations . . .

.  .  .  to seniors David Yeh and Helen Wang, for receiving scholarship awards from the Rho Psi Society at a ceremony held at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) Culture Center in Gaithersburg on Saturday. David received a Third Place award, and Helen received an Honorable Mention award, for their essays which addressed the topic "The Importance of Pursuing Higher Education.”

.  .  .  to sophomore Anusha Nathan, for receiving an Honorable Mention scholarship award for her participation in this year's DuPont Challenge (c) Science Essay Competition. More than 9,000 essays nationwide were submitted to the competition.

.  .  .  to sophomore Erin Yamaguchi, Art II/Gifted &Talented (G/T); senior Sharish Malik, Art II/(GT) and senior Alex Merkel, Photography II, for receiving a Curator Choice Award each at an awards ceremony held at the Walters Arts Museum, Baltimore, on Saturday. Selected by a judge's panel of curators from area museums and art institutions, the Curator Choice Awards are part of  the annual Congressional Arts Competition for the Seventh Congressional District (Representative Elijah E. Cummings) of Maryland. Erin, Sharish and Alex have earned our high school the distinction of winning the most Curator Choice Awards in the Seventh Congressional District. The Awards ceremony was attended by proud parents and family and CHS Fine Arts Instructors Nan Collins, Jo Tulkoff and Heidi Praff.

Congratulations, Chemathon Team!

CHEMISTRY TEACHER Yuanjun Liu is pleased to annonce that the CHS Chemathon Team scored Second Place in the Level I "Avogadro’s Tiebreaker" challenge, Fifth Place in the "Chemysterie Challenge," and Fourth Place overall at the 28th annual Chemathon competition held last Saturday at the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP). The Chemathon is a  competition for high school chemistry students in Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. The Chemathon competition is organized by a committee of area high school chemistry teachers and chemists, and is hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMCP. 

Student wins First Place at state History Day competition

CONGRATULATIONS to senior Sal Salehi for winning First Place in the Senior Individual Web Sites category at the Maryland History Day competition held at The University of Maryland Baktimore County (UMBC) this weekend.  Sal's winning entry is titled "Haitian Revolution of 1791: An Inexorable Force for the Emancipation of Slaves in the New World."Sal now advances to the National History Day competition to be held at The University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) in June. Sal's accomplishment has brought distinction to our school, for Centennial is the only high school in Howard County to send a winner to the national competition.

THE CHS CHAPTER of  the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the 2012 FLBA State Leadership Conference "Gateway to Greatness" held in Hunt Valley April 19-21 to participate in competitive events, to network and share their successes with other FLBA members from across the state, and to attend workshops to learn new ideas about shaping their future careers. CONGRATULATIONS to Andrew Cho, Fourth Place, Business Mathematics; Siwon Seo, Third Place, Accounting II; Ryan Breedlove and Paul Lai, Second Place,  Banking & Financial Systems; and to Aneesh Agrawal, First Place Technology Concepts.

CHS School Counselor honored

CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Jae Hi Hebler for being named High School Counselor of the Year by the Howard County Association of Counseling and Development (HCACD).

Our SGA recognized for leadership, service

CONGRATULATIONS! The Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) has named Centennial High School's Student Government Association (SGA) the 2011-2012 recipient of its Felix Simon Award for Leadership and Service, a criteria-based award which allows student council officers, members and advisors to evaluate their council against a shared set of standards and to create an opportunity for student councils to be recognized for their effectiveness. Just one high school statewide receives this annual award; the CHS SGA last received the Felix Simon Award for the 2005-2006 academic year.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Senior Keonte Potts has been named Howard County Times Boys Basketball All-County Player of the Year; Keonte also is included in The Washington Post's Boys Basketball Winter All-Metro Honorable Mention roster.

Junior Omari Ringgold has been named to the Boys Basketball All-County First Team; HCT story is here. 

Senior Ben Goldsmith played for the winning team at Howard County's first-ever East vs. West All-Star Basketball game at Howard Community College on March 24. Howard County Times article is here.

Daniel, Sale and Matt are enrolled in the school's G/T Independent Research Program; their award-winning research qualifies them to compete at the state level at the 2012 Maryland History Day Competition on SATURDAY, APRIL 28 at The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
