Congratulations, Alpha Achievers

The following students were inducted into the CHS Alpha Achievers Program in a ceremony in the Auditorium 0n Tuesday, February 21:

Alpha Achievers is an academic achievement program for African American males; inductees have maintained a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), have performed community service and have participated in student leadership opportunities.

Scholarship alert

The Howard County Foundation for Black Educational & Cultural Achievement, Inc., (HCFBECA) offers high school seniors non-renewable "Dollars for Scholars" awards for post-secondary education and training. APPLICATION DEADLINE: THURSDAY, MARCH 15. Details available on HCFBECA website (CLICK HERE).

The State of Maryland International Reading Council (SoMIRAC) Joseph J. Fox Memorial Scholarship ($2,000) is for seniors planning to major in teaching reading or a literacy-related field. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 13.  Visit SoMIRAC scholarship wepage (www.somirac.org) for details.

The Notre Dame of Maryland University's Clare & Robert Moore Scholarship Fund annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to incoming and current students at the Women's College who plan to major in Drama or English. Visit (www.crmoorescholarship) for details. APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 15

Student Essay Contest winner honored at annual Celebration of Dr. King

CHS SENIOR SARA CALVERT won First Place, high school division, in the Howard County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Commission's "Renewing the Dream" Essay Contest. Sara accepted her prize at the Commission's annual celebration of Dr. King at a ceremony held at Howard Community College on Sunday, January 15. Student takes first place in "Renewing the Dream"essay contest

CONGRATULATIONS to senior Sara Calvert for taking First Place, high school level, in the 27th annual Howard County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Commission's annual student essay contest. Sara's winning essay addressed the question, "In considering Dr. King’s dream of equality for all, what does 'Renewing the Dream' mean to you and what can you do to 'Renew the Dream' in your school and/or local community?"

Sara will be recognized at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration held at the Howard Community College Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center/Smith Theater on Sunday, January 15.

National Achievement Scholarship Program Outstanding Participant

CONGRATULATIONS to senior Joseph Hunter, who has been named a 2012 Outstanding Participant of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's (NMSC) National Achievement Scholarship Program. The NMSC brings names of Outstanding Participants to the attention of admissions officials at approximately 1,500 four-year colleges and universities in the United States.

"Renewing the dream": Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., student essay contest

The HOWARD COUNTY MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., HOLIDAY COMMISSION invites middle and high school students to participate in its annual student essay contest; essays must address this question: "In considering Dr. King's dream of equality for all, what does 'Renewing the Draem' mean to you, and what can you do to 'Renew the Dream' in your school and/or community?"  First, Second and Thurd Prize winners will receive cash awards of $300, $200 and $150 respectively and will be recognized and the 27th annual celebration at Howard Community College on January 15, 2012.  Click HERE for essay contest rules, submission information.
