HCPSS Community Notices 01.25.11: Columbia Association's "Battle of the Dance"

The following announcement has been approved by the HCPSS Public Information Office for school notices and distribution. Please contact the Public Information Office at 410/313-6682 if you have any questions.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 7 - 9 PM -- The Other Barn, Oakland Mills Village Center, Columbia. FREE. The Columbia Association’s Teen Advisory and Middle School committees will sponsor “The Battle of the Dance,” an exciting and fun-filled youth dance competition open to dancers of all ages in Howard County. Students may enter the competiton as individuals, individuals, or teams and will be asked to bring their own music (CD, no explicit lyrics). Entrants will have five (5) minutes to perform; local dance professionals will judge; and prizes will be offered for best performance in each category. An "EGGS-CELLENT" way to help us raise funds for the After-Prom Party

Next weekend: Howard County Solo & Ensemble Festival, Howard County Dance Festival

Both Festivals take place   SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4

Howard County SOLO & ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL -- 9 AM - 4 PM, Mt. Hebron High School, Ellicott City. Students will receive feedback from adjudicators as well as Certificate of Participation. Performances receiving a "Superior" rating at the county level will qualify to participate in the Maryland Music Educators (MMEA) State Solo & Ensemble Festival at Towson University in May.

Howard County DANCE FESTIVAL -- 7 PM, Atholton High School, Columbia. Dance companies from every Howard County high school will perform; tickets $8 AT THE DOOR.

Monday: A MUST-SEE for the college-bound, parents of

"HAZE: The Perils of the College Drinking Culture in America"

MONDAY, JANUARY 30, 7 PM -- Howard High School, Ellicott City. Parents, guardians and college-bound students are invited to a free viewing of  the award-winning documentary "HAZE," which tells the true story of a college freshman who died during a hazing incident involving alcohol. Guest Speaker Dr. Joseph Schwartz, Medical Director of Psychiatric Services at Howard County General Hospital; Kevin Pitt, Department of Fraternity & Sorority Life, University of Maryland, College Park, and Tamara Saunders, Assistant Director of Student Conduct, University of Maryland, will shed light on the severity of binge drinking, destructive drinking games and hazing, and will discuss hazing policies on college campuses. A community education event co-sponsored by HC DrugFree and the Howard High School PTSA.

BOYS BASKETBALL: The Eagles defeated (59-40) Fallston on Monday; Howard County Times report is here, Washington Post game summary, player statistics are here. Tonight the Eagles travel to Atholton.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Lady Eagles defeated (47-41) Chesapeake (Anne Arundel County) on Monday; Howard County Times article is here, Washington Post game summary, player statistics are here. Tonight the Lady Eagles host Atholton and invite all middle schools girls who play basketball (Centennial's Future Lady Eagles? ) to attend the game and have a chance to win prizes and participate in fun contests during the Varsity halftime.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD:  The Howard County Relays are today.

WRESTLING: At yesterday's tri-meet, Oakland Mills defeated (61-14) Mt. Hebron, Mt. Hebron defeated (50-27) Centennial and Oakland Mills defeated (48-23) Centennial; Howard County Times article and video of the showdown between Centennial's and Oakland Mills' three-time state champions is here;

HC DrugFree presents"What's Happening Now? A Parent's Guide To Substances Teens May Be Using" "

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 7 -8 PM -- Lime Kiln Middle School, Fulton. FREE community education event for parents. Angel Bivens, RPh, MBA, CSPI,the Maryland Poison Center's public education coordinator, will share information about familiar and new substances available for teens to abuse: Inhalants, OTC and prescription medicines, alcohol, "bath salts," marijuana, "K2,"  "Spice"  and more.

Next Monday: PSAT Scores Information Night

MONDAY, JANUARY 30, 7 PM -- Long Reach High School, Columbia. FREE  PSAT test score interpretation. Parents and students are encouraged to bring the student's PSAT score report (mailed to homes of tenth- and eleventh-graders who took the test at school in October). Can't make it this Monday? There will be another PSAT Scores Information Night workshop on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 7 PM, at Glenelg High School, Glenelg.

"FAT NITE FOLLIES" is back on!

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 7 PM -- Cafeteria. Come to the Follies to see the Theatre students' annual variety show (comedic skits, song 'n' dance routines), connect with friends and enjoy an ice cream sundae. TICKETS $5 AT THE DOOR.

Entertainment Books, Sally Foster recap, new Committee chair needed

Dear Centennial High School Community,

THANK YOU for supporting the PTSA by purchasing 2011-2012 Entertainment Books and Sally Foster items online. Since Entertainment.com increased our donation rate to 50% of purchases, the PTSA received $900 from Entertainment Book sales; we earned  approximately $530 from our Sally Foster fundraiser.

I've chaired this PTSA fundraising committee for four years and this year, my son will graduate from Centennial High School. So, I'm currently seeking someone who would like to take over this volunteer position. It's a one-person job that will have parent volunteers to help as needed to sell at school and community events -- and you're done for the year when sales end in December! THE PICKATIME online appointment-scheduling service for Parent-Teacher Conferences will become ACTIVE at 7 AM on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7; Pick-a-Time service will be available 'round-the-clock until it goes OFFLINE at MIDNIGHT on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10.

The PickATime link can be found on the CHS website (www.centennialeagles.org) [in the red sidebar menu on the left] and on the HCPSS website (www.hcpss.org) [with instructions for using  PickATime there also]. The CHS Front Office asks

You'll need to have STUDENT ID NUMBERS handy to use PickATimetime. Student ID Numbers are printed on Interim Report Cards and on Report Cards. PLEASE NOTE: For security reasons, Student ID Numbers cannot be given out over the telephone.

Problems with PickATime?  CHS Administration asks you to call the Front Office,  410/313-2856.

TONIGHT: Strothers Family fundraiser at Jilly's

Dear Centennial High School Community,

THANK YOU to all who have made donations, delivered family meals and have sent their support and prayers to the Strothers. We look forward to seeing you all tonight Jilly's (please see below).

Until the Strothers move into a rental property, FAMILY MEALS should be delivered to my house at 10049 Century Drive (Century Drive is right across the street from Centennial High School.) Once the Strothers are settled, family meals will be delivered directly to their new, temporary residence.

DONATIONS AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS for the Strothers also can be delivered to my house; I'll store the household items until Strothers are ready to use them.

   JILLY'S WILL DONATE 15 % of all proceeds to help
      support Dave, Sherry, Chad and Anthony Strothers, who
      have lost their home to fire.

    The fundraiser will include 50-50 RAFFLES
                                                                          every hour, on the hour.

   Tonight's fundraiser is sponsored by Glenelg High School, where
   Dave Strothers currently serves as Assistant Principal. (Dave also
   has served as an Assistant Principal at Centennial High School.)

We want to put together a memory book or DVD of pictures and video for the Strothers. Those of you who know Sherry well know that she is always filming and taking pictures. If we could just put together even a snapshot of the past for her, I know she would be so appreciative. Please send me prints of photos or DVDs that you may have of Anthony and Chad Strothers -- I'm thinking sporting events, concerts, awards ceremonies, preschool, first day of school, playing, anything!

Thank you again for everything you are doing to help the Strothers. Your compassion, concern and generosity are what is getting them through. They feel blessed to know such wonderful people.

Girls Basketball Team hosts "Future (Lady) Eagles Night"

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 4 PM (JV), 5:30 PM (Varsity) -- CHS Gymnasium. Parents and guardians, if your middle school daughter plays basketball and will someday become a CHS student, the CHS Girls Basketball Team invites them to attend "Future (Lady) Eagles Night" to see the JV and Varsity Teams go against Atholton High School. The evening will include fun contests and give-aways  during the Varsity game halftime. TICKETS: Student $3, adult $4. Invite friends and neighbors to join you at this event!
