Task Force to document school, Centennial Lane traffic
The
BMMS/CHS Traffic Safety Task Force will videotape motor and pedestrian
traffic patterns on Centennial Lane and on the BMMS/CHS school campus
on Wednesday, November 11 from 7 - 8 AM and also from 2 - 3 PM. The Task Force will film from several locations along Centennial Lane and at the entrance/exit and drop-off
zones for both schools. The traffic pattern videotape will be used as documentation to accompany
budget hearing
testimony; the tape will be made available to school and county officials to help identify
short-term,
low-cost solutions to mitigate the current traffic congestion.

County Police to offer
Collision Avoidance training classes
for teen drivers
Friday, November 13 -- 6 - 10 PM
and Saturday, November 14 -- 8
AM - 4 PM
James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center, Marriottsville
Howard
County police are offering a new program for teen drivers who could
benefit from more specialized experience on the road. "Collision
Avoidance Training", taught by law enforcement officers and adapted
from police training, will prepare teens for various road hazards and
driving conditions. This two-part teen driver training program -- the
first to be offered in the state -- consists of a four-hour classroom
session and an eight-hour practical driving lesson for behind-the-wheel
experience; the driving lesson features exercises in evasive maneuvers,
emergency braking, cornering, backing, skid recovery, steering,
acceleration and more.
Participants must possess a driver's
license and bring a vehicle to drive for the practical driving lesson.
The Collision Avoidance Training class fee is $195 and registration is
limited. For more information and/or to register, call 410-313-3750.
Students who will be absent for less than one week are responsible for checking teacher websites or directly contacting the teacher or a classmate to get any missed assignments.
Students who will be absent for more than one week should contact Anne Drnec, Student Services secretary, at adrnec@hcpss.org or by calling Mrs. Drnec at 410-313-2857
for assistance in securing assignments. In all instances, teachers are
provided 24 hours in which to put the homework together to either send
to Student Services, or to reply by email.
For extended absences
(more than two weeks) please contact the student's Counselor for
consultation. In all instances, please remember to provide a note
explaining student absences the day the student returns to school.

"Know What to Do"
student illness seminar
for parents, educators
Lime Kiln Middle School PTA invites all parents and educators to their upcoming seminar "Allergies? Asthma? Flu? Know What To Do" on Monday, November 16 at 7 PM in the school's Cafeteria.
Youth allergies and asthma are prevalent problems in today's society,
and when seasonal or H1N1 influenza is added to the mix, parents and
teachers may have questions about how to care for children and
students. The Howard County Health Department and the Greater Baltimore
Medical
Center's Asthma Sinus Allergy Program have teamed up to teach, and
answer questions about, how child care-givers and educators can
recognize
similarities, differences and connections between allergies, asthma and
the H1N1 flu. The November 16 "Allergies . . . What to do?"
evening seminar will be presented by Peter Beilenson, M.D., Howard County
Health Officer and former Health Commissioner for
Baltimore City. Dr. Beilenson will also provide updates about the
current status of seasonal and H1N1 influenza.
Seminar seating is limited, so please pre-register online at www.asap-gbmc.com or by calling 410-583-8393.

August 30 start date preferred
for 2010-11 school year
December 10 Public Hearing
on Proposed 2010-2011 Academic Calendar
Because
the majority of parents and Howard County Public School System (HCPSS)
staff who responded to the HCPSS Academic Calendar Committee Survey
preferred to have students begin the 2010-11 school year on Monday,
August 30, 2010 (rather than on Monday, August 23), the Committee has
decided to recommend the later date at the Board of Education meeting
tomorrow. After it is presented to the Board, the proposed 2010-2011
academic calendar will be available for
review on the HCPSS website. The Board will hold a public
hearing on the proposed calendar on Thursday, December 10 and take
action on January 14, 2010.
Survey results not only helped the
Academic Calendar Committee gather input concerning the school start
date regarding the relative "lateness" of next year's Labor Day
holiday, but also informed responding parents and HCPSS staff that
schools will be
closed for a Primary and a General Election in 2010, which will
extend the school year further so that the last day of school for
students would be Wednesday, June 16, 2011 (a date without any
inclement weather make-up days factored in).
The Howard County Public School System's (HCPSS) Fine Arts Advisory Council invites all interested volunteers to attend its meeting on Monday, November 9 at 7 PM
at the Faulkner Ridge Center, Columbia. You'll find out how you can
help at the HCPSS Arts College Night special event on Monday, December
14. For more information, please contact the Advanced Programs and Fine
Arts Office at 410-313-6885.
