CHS Volleyball: "Expectations of excellence"

If you haven't already, check out THIS ARTICLE published in the Thursday, October 29 Washington Post about Centennial's Volleyball team, coach and player achievements.

From Student Services

October was "National Teen-age Depression and Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month" at CHS, and Centennial staff and students would like you to know about their activities and accomplishments during the past weeks. Below is a very condensed version of an in-depth article which will be published in the December issue of the PTSA's Eagle's Eye newsletter.

At the month's outset, the Student Services Center conducted a depression and suicide awareness Staff Training Session. Teachers at CHS supported a Classroom Poster Campaign by displaying, and calling attention to with talking points, new teen depression and suicide awareness posters in classrooms. Thanks to CHS English Teacher and Yearbook Advisor Rus VanWestervelt and his "Lines of Love" Foundation, student volunteers spent their Thursday lunch periods manning a "Lines of Love" resource table in the Cafeteria hallway. Free, weekly raffles attracted students to the table. The Lines of Love table generated so much interest that students have formed a "Lines of Love" Club at CHS. (See Quicknotes article below.) Leading up to, and throughout the month of October, the PTSA's twice-weekly e-newsletter CHS Quicknotes worked with Student Services staff to publish topical information about preventing and managing teen depression and suicide and provided links (like this one HERE) to available school and community resources.

It cannot be overstated how very seriously Centennial High School's staff and students regard the issues of teen depression and suicide -- not just during an "awareness" month, but all year round. At Centennial, students can speak to a school counselor or school psychologist about any issue of concern, including feelings of anxiety, depression and/or thoughts of hurting themselves. Centennial's Student Services Center provides immediate, on-site support and is readily available to provide students, parents and guardians with appropriate and confidential assistance with an array of school and community mental health resources.

FAFSA "Senior Parent Night" is Wednesday

The 2010-11 FAFSA Application won't be available until January 1, but there are things  that parents can do in the meantime to prepare. Please see THIS ARTICLE.

Regional Cheerleading Competition is this Thursday

CHS Varsity Cheerleaders placed Second in their Division at the Autumn Cheerleading Invitational of Howard County on October 26. Next up: the Howard County Regional Cheerleading Competition this Thursday (November 5) at Glenelg High School. All twelve county high schools send their best cheerleading teams to this event; this competition determines the top three varsity cheerleading squads in the county.

They cheer for us bleacher-folk, they cheer for our school sports teams . . . here's an opportunity to reciprocate and show our cheerleaders appreciation and support!  Come and cheer for CHS' cheerleaders at the Regional Competition at Glenelg High School this Thursday.  If you've never been to a cheerleading competition, you'll find that the skill, athleticism and sheer, positive-energy peppiness of this event is not to be missed. The Competition begins at 5 PM, but come early to get a good seat -- these events are usually a full house.

Monday, November 9   --   5 - 8  PM

Qdoba's Mexican Grill
(intersection of Rte. 40 and St. John's Lane)

This is the easiest way that you can help to make this year's PTSA-sponsored After-Prom Party a success. On Monday, November 9, the Ellicott City Qdoba Mexican Grill will donate a portion of all proceeds between the hours of 5 to 8 PM to the PTSA's 2010 After-Prom Party. November 10 Stressless Tests® parent workshop

"My child does well in class, but doesn't do well on tests."

"My child is bright but disorganized, and is a world-class
  procrastinator."

"There is so much conflict about homework, it stresses the whole
  family."

If the above sounds familiar, then Betty Caldwell's Stressless Tests® "Testing, Testing . . ." Parent Workshop at Burleigh Manor Middle School at 7:30 PM on Tuesday evening, November 10, could provide you with insights and resources to successfully manage these challenges. Parents will learn about brain-based learning styles; how these learning styles impact every area of performance; and how this can lead to "bumping heads" in the household. Workshop participants will acquire proven strategies to reduce stress and improve results based on how their child learns best. The workshop schedule includes time for individual questions. Registration is $45. To register, go to www.Stresslesstests.org, or email questions to Bcaldwell@comcast.net or call 410-740-4659.

New "Lines of Love Club" at CHS

During the school's "Teen Depression and Suicide Awareness and Prevention" campaign last month,  CHS English Teacher and Yearbook Advisor Rus VanWestervelt and his "Lines of Love" Foundation arranged for a Lines of Love information table to be stationed in the Cafeteria hallway during Thursday lunch periods. Student volunteers manning the table made available to their peers brochures, information sheets, agency resources and youth hotline magnets and wallet cards. A free raffle each week helped to attract students to the table; raffle prizes included tee-shirts, journals and lanyards.

The degree of student interest generated by the lunchtime Lines of Love table has resulted in the formation of a new, Lines of Love Club here at Centennial High School. The purpose of the Club will be to raise awareness of mental health issues and resources and to help teens who are struggling with anxiety and depression to know that they are not alone.  Centennial's Lines of Love Club will work cooperatively and collaboratively with Student Services staff to support students; Club Advisors will include Mr. VanWestervelt and Student Services staff (counselors and school psychologist). The Club will connect teens as "lines of love" and provide a supportive environment in which to share information and resources in the community. CHS's  Lines of Love Club will not be a counseling or therapy group. To find out more about the new Lines of Love Club at CHS, contact Mr. Vanwestervelt at Rus_Vanwestervelt@hcpss.org.

Find out more about the Lines of Love Foundation by visiting its Facebook blog HERE and the Lines of Love Facebook fan page HERE.

PTSA Traffic Safety committee

Centennial High School's PTSA has created a Traffic Safety Committee to address the traffic situation on Centennial Lane and within the parking lot shared by the high school and Burleigh Manor Middle School. PTSA Traffic Safety Committee members are Tara Berry, Siva Daivamani, Siobhan Zarek and Jolie Wineberg, and Susan Hughes has signed on as committee Chair.

Here's the latest from Ms. Hughes: Last Spring, the Howard County Bureau of Highways conducted a Traffic Survey which determined that a traffic light on Centennial Lane in front of the two schools was justified if there were a combined entrance for both schools. This traffic light project will require Board of Education capital funds to redesign and configure the schools' shared parking lots.

In the meantime, Centennial High School's PTSA and the Burleigh Manor Middle School PTA have united to form a CHS/BMMS Joint Traffic Safety Task Force to robustly advocate for funding the parking lot redesign plan, and to work with Howard County officials to identify and encourage shorter-term, more immediate solutions to the present traffic situation.

More in-depth and up-to-date information about actions taken by the CHS/BMMS Joint Traffic Safety Task Force will be provided in the next (December 2009) issue of The Eagles Eye newsletter. For more information and/or to provide traffic and school parking lot input, please contact Susan Hughes at susanbhughes@verizon.net, or you can join the new Facebook group at "Centennial Community Supporting Traffic Safety at BMMS/CHS".

CHS hosts Capitol Debate Fall Classic Tournament this weekend

Best of luck to the CHS Debate Team this weekend -- they will participate in the Third Annual Capitol Debate Fall Classic Tournament, held this year at Centennial High School. The tournament is co-sponsored by the Howard County Public School System and by Capitol Debate, a non-profit entity. The Capitol Debate Tournament rotates to different schools in Howard County every year.

Even though it has been without a club sponsor this year, the CHS Debate Club's hard work at its Tuesday-night practices have paid off -- CHS' Debate Team ranked in the Top Six at a debate tournament at Wake Forest University earlier this Fall, and the CHS team made the Top 32 ranking at a tournament in New York City two weeks ago.

Click HERE for information about this weekend's debate at CHS, and about Capitol Debate's objectives of creating high-calibre, national debate opportunities here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, close to the nation's capitol.

The PTSA Pancake Breakfast was held the morning of Homecoming on Saturday, October 24, with good food aplenty and lots of fun for all. We served more than 750 people and are happy to report that leftover muffins and other baked goods were donated to the Grassroots homeless shelter. We'd like to thank the many, many people who made this event possible, including Roseanna and Mary in the kitchen and Custodial and Front Office staff members; we're so grateful for the big efforts of volunteers Bruce Press, Sydney Wallace, Len Busso, Linda Lucht, Tom Cosentino and Michelle Caros, the more than 50 volunteers working the event, and the more than 60 dedicated muffin-bakers. Thank you all so much!

The Fall school play The Good Doctor will be performed every night in the CHS Auditorium beginning Wednesday, November 11 through Saturday, November 14; showtime is 7 PM.  Click HERE to see why this Doctor appointment promises to not only be pain-free, but actually very pleasant.

Don't be afraid!

Yes, it's Halloween is this weekend, but don't be afraid  .  .  .  it's not too late to join the CHS PTSA this year! But, it will be scary for us if we don't meet our annual Membership and fundraising ghouls goals. So please help the PTSA -- and help your school -- by becoming a member. The PTSA Membership Form is in The Eagle's Eye or you can download it HERE. Thanks, and have a fun and safe Halloween. Boo!

Two scholarship opportunities

2010 Intel Science Talent SearchScholarship* -- Deadline for entries is November 18, 2009. For high school seniors who've been conducting independent research this year. The Intel Science Talent Search (STS) scholarship carries a Grand Prize of $100,000, along with a chance to present the research at a national conference and meet leaders in that area of research. Eligible students must have conducted an independent research project in a field of science, medicine, mathematics or engineering; the research project must have been the student's work alone, not a group or team project. In addition to a Grand Prize winner, the Intel Science Talent Search names nine winners of prizes ranging from $20,000 to $75,000; 40 finalists (each awarded$7,500 plus a new laptop); and 300 semifinalists (awarded $1,000 each). Detailed 2010 Intel STS Scholarship information and entry requirements are HERE.

Foreclosure.com Scholarship Essay Program --Deadline for entries is December 31, 2009. For students who are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an accredited college, university, law or trade school in the United States; U.S. citizenship is required. This scholarship provides a great opportunity for students to think about and respond to one of the problems weighing most heavily on society in the last year: The global economic crisis and its effect in particular on homeowners. The real estate website Foreclosure.com is sponsoring a scholarship essay contest that invites college students to propose solutions to the ongoing spike in home foreclosures, by writing a 1,000 - to 2,500-word essay which best explains "how to solve the foreclosure crisis."  Top prize is $5,000 with four $1,000 runner-up prizes. More informationHERE.

*Centennial High School is no stranger to the Intel Science Talent Search. Last year, two Centennial High School students were named Intel STS Semifinalists, winning a $1,000 prize each, and, consequently, CHS was awarded $2,000 to further support and develop its science, mathematics and engineering curricula.

School absentee rates now online

Last week the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) began posting the schools that reach a 10 percent or higher rate of absenteeism at www.hcpss.org/pandemic. This information is updated daily. If your child's school is not listed, that means that the absentee rate for the school has not reached 10% or higher during the current school year.

"Window" for scheduling high school graduation dates announced

School officials and the management of Merriweather Post Pavilion have identified the window of Monday, May 24 - Thursday, June 3 as the time during which 2010 high school graduations will be held.

It is possible that some graduations may fall before the last day of school for seniors;  this "last day" is identified in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) calendar as Friday, May 28, 2010. Therefore, the last day for seniors may vary for schools which end up with earlier graduations. While this is not ideal, every attempt will be made to schedule as many ceremonies as possible after Memorial Day 2010. The actual date and time of each school's graduation ceremony will be available by April 15 at the latest.

'til next time,

A musical idea for "family time"

Tell the kids to try to get their homework done early, or ask them to make time for a homework break -- and head up to the high school to take in some "kulchuh". There are two free*, Fall Band Concerts planned for later this week. You could round out the evening by going for ice cream afterwards, or for pie at the diner.

Fall Symphonic and Jazz Band Concert

Thursday, October 29   --   CHS Auditorium   --   7 - 8:15 PM

The high school's Symphonic Band will perform first, with selections which include "Little English Suite", "Trail of Tears" and "Fantasia 2000". The Jazz Ensemble will perform second, with "So What" by Miles Davis, "In the Stone" by Earth, Wind, and Fire and other great jazz charts.

Fall Choral, Orchestra and Jazz Band Concert

Friday, October 30   --    CHS Auditorium    --    7 PM

Close your eyes, sit back and relax and let the music uplift and transport you to another place. The Orchestra String Ensemble will perform "Capriol Suite" by Warlock and "Themes from The Moldau" by Smetana; the String Orchestra will perform "Divertimento in D" by Mozart and Schubert's "Symphony No. 4" (First Movement). One of the Jazz Combo's pieces will be "Afro Blue" by Mongo Santamaria.

The Concert Choir will perform "Simply Alleluia" by Moore; the Women's Choir will sing "Inclina Domine" by Rhineberger; and Madrigals will lift their voices to Scarlatti's "Exulte Deo".

*If you'd like to help support Centennial High School's Music Programs, a voluntary suggested donation ($5 per person or $10 per family) is always greatly appreciated.

PTSA winter coat drive ends this Friday

Please drop off coats, sweatshirts, gloves, hats, etc., that are clean and in good condition in the blue bin in the school lobby. These items will benefit Howard County residents. Thank you from PTA Council/Howard County Representatives Brenda Marshall and Anne Horstkamp.

Fall school play The Good Doctor guaranteed to amuse

Wednesday, November 11   -  Saturday, November 14

CHS Auditorium    --    7 PM

The play's crazy costumes, bizarre props,  clever set design and spot-on comedic timing will prompt more than enough laughter to light up four dark and dreary autumn nights.

Written by American playwright Neil Simon, and based on the short stories of 19th century Russian short story author and physician Anton Chekov, The Good Doctor is a series of  self-contained story-scenes connected by the narrating character of The Writer. Stage talent features a balanced mix of Centennial freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, and these story-scene titles from the play will pique your curiousity:  "The Sneeze"; "The Governess"; "Surgery"; "The Seduction"; "The Drowned Man"; "The Audition"; "A Defenseless Creature";  and "A Quiet War".

Come have some laughs and see for yourself the hard work and creativity (backstage as well as under the lights) that went into the production of Centennial High School's Fall school play.  Tickets are $10 at the door.

Additional Form required for some "Reflections" entries

The PTSA has just been informed that a Consent Form signed by persons videotaped and/or photographed in any Reflections entry will also be required; this Consent Form must be submitted with the entrant's General Student Participation, Parental Consent and Student Entry forms. As soon as the Consent Form is available it will be posted on the PTSA's webpage  (www.chs-ptsa.org). Questions, please contact Leslie Stroud at the strouds@stroudfamily.net.

CHS "Spirit Week" and Homecoming

(updated even more)

Click HERE to see what's planned to celebrate the rest of Centennial High School's "Spirit Week" and Homecoming this Saturday.

"Kick off" your Homecoming Saturday morning with

The PTSA Pancake Breakfast

$6 at the door for Adults and students
$5 for children (age 12 and younger)

Fluffy pancakes, savory sausage, home-made muffins, juice, milk, coffee and hot chocolate --mmmmmm!

This tasty meal does more than "keep your ribs apart" on Homecoming morning -- the Pancake Breakfast is a major annual fundraising event for the high school's PTSA. The PTSA puts Pancake Breakfast funds right back into the school (programs and services which enrich the school environment) and into the school's students (annual scholarships, Class grants, and more).  Be fed and fortified at the PTSA's Pancake Breakfast -- and you'll fortify your school.

Pancake Breakfast Muffin Bakers: Please drop off your two dozen muffins to the Front Office during school hours this Friday, October 23, or before 7:30 AM on Saturday. All Pancake Breakfast volunteer workers, please see your shift HERE.

Got a convertible? Drive it in Saturday's Homecoming Parade!

The Homecoming Parade Committee still needs a few more people to volunteer to drive their convertibles "rag-top down" in this Saturday's Homecoming Parade.  If you're game, please contact Ann Mulhollen, CHS Special Services Teacher, at Ann_Mulhollen@hcpss.org.

Put your car keys on a CHS lanyard*

Cash and checks  will be accepted. Lanyards will be available for purchase during all school lunch periods this week and at Saturday's Homecoming game. Thanks for supporting the Theatre Department with your purchase of a CHS lanyard.  Go Eagles!

Join in the fun of  "Spirit Week" . . .

.  .  .  and show your "school spirit" by joining the Centennial High School PTSA! We still need at least 100 more people to join, in order to reach our Membership goal this year. The PTSA Membership Form can be found in your Eagle's Eye newsletter or by downloading it HERE. See you at the PTSA Pancake Breakfast and at the Homecoming game this Saturday!

Hubei (China) University performance well-attended

More than 400 people attended the performance of the Martial Arts and Lion Dance Troupe from Hubei (China) University in the Centennial High School Gymnasium on the evening of October 12. Many thanks to World Languages teacher Hui Liang and her students for coordinating this special community event.

A "Marching Under the Stars" thank-you

From Beth van Kan, CHS Band Backers' "Marching Under the Stars" event coordinator:

Centennial High School's Fourth Annual "Marching Under the Stars" on Saturday, October 10 was another outstanding community event supported by the extraordinary volunteer effort of many dedicated Marching Band parents and CHS student volunteers. Fourteen high school bands (a record number) from Maryland and Virginia performed in this United States Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) competition, resulting a total of more than one thousand marching band participants at the event. A record crowd attendance was delighted and entertained by the musicianship and artistry of each band.

Many, many thanks to our Centennial High School community -- you are CHS Marching Band's best ambassadors for "Marching Under the Stars". A special thank-you to CHS Boosters President John Powers for serving as emcee, and to all of the Boosters who ran the Eagle's Nest concession stand. Thank you to CHS Principal Dr. Carl Perkins, to Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Superintendant Dr. Sydney Cousin, and to HCPSS Board of Education Members Sandra French, Ellen Flynn-Giles and Janet Siddiqui for presenting awards  .  .  .  Congratulations to Dr. Max VanDerBeek, CHS director of Bands; to Jessica Hammers, Drill Team instructor; to Mike Ashmead, Flag Corps instructor; to all of the contributing Marching Band staff; and to our CHS Marching Eagles for another memorable performance  .  .  .  Funds raised by this event help to support all of the music programs at Centennial High School. (Please support the Sponsors who purchased advertisements in the "Marching Under the Stars" printed program book -- make sure to tell them them that you saw their ad printed there.)  See you "Under the Stars" next year!

 Updates --  Friday, October 16, 2009                    3  PM

October 16, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I have some sad news to share with you.  Late Thursday evening, Chuck Sands, our head custodian, died at the hospital due to complications from acute pneumonia.  Mr. Sands had not been feeling well and had gone to the hospital earlier in the week to receive medical treatment.  We have already received many calls at school today from parents and students who had heard about Mr. Sands' death, and we are all saddened by the death of our beloved head custodian.

I am sending this letter to parents today for a few reasons.  First, I want to ensure that all of our parents have accurate information and know what supports will be available at school when our students return on Monday.  Our school counselors and other student services staff, along with members of the Howard County School System Crisis Team, will be available at Centennial on Monday to provide support for students and staff.   Materials will also be available in the Counseling Center for students who want to make a condolence card or write a note of sympathy for Mr. Sands' family.

Second, I want to inform our parents that there will be a moment of silence in memory of Mr. Sands at our football game this evening.  I feel that this moment of silence will be one way to honor Mr. Sands' positive impact on our school community.  However, our parents also need to understand that we will not be able to provide counseling supports for students at the game.  If you feel that your child will be upset by the moment of silence and/or need help talking about Mr. Sands death tonight or over the weekend, please spend some time talking to your child about this sad news.

With this in mind, I would like to provide our parents with some suggestions for talking with their children about death and grief.  Whenever there is a death such as this, students, staff, and parents are struck by a wide range of emotions and a deep sense of loss.  However, these emotions can be particularly difficult for young people to understand.  Situations such as these may create a variety of reactions, including sleep disturbances, temporary loss of appetite, anxiety, or fears about personal health and safety or the health and safety of family members.  Young people may also use humor to deal with their feelings, and although this may seem unusual, it is a common coping mechanism.  Some suggestions for dealing with concerns you may have about your child are discussed below.

  • Listen to your child's story - Let your child know that you are available to answer any questions.  You may not have all the answers to their questions, but they will benefit from your attention.  Provide simple, accurate information in response to questions.

  • Encourage your child to express his or her feelings - Talk about your own feelings.  Don't be afraid to cry in his or her presence and share your own loss experiences.  It is okay to cry together and hold each other.

  • Talk to your child about your personal value system around death and loss - Discuss your family's personal and/or religious beliefs about death.  Your child may be particularly anxious about the sudden realization that death ultimately happens to everyone and that death can come without warning.

  • Support your child and be patient with his or her feelings in responding to this loss - Spend extra time tonight to be with your child discussing the day's events and processing them.

The school does not have any information about funeral arrangements or memorial services at this time. I will be sharing that information with students and staff once arrangements are finalized.  I am certain that you will join us in keeping the Sands' family in your thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead as they face this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Carl Perkins

Principal

When you join the PTSA . . .

. . . you've said "yes" to a group of dedicated volunteers -- parents, students, school staff and others -- who are united in the goal of positively affecting (in large ways and small) the educational experience and environment of everyone connected to Centennial High School.

It's encouraging that nearly 600 people to date have said "yes" to the PTSA, and we thank every single one of them for becoming members. But, our annual and ideal membership goal is 750 PTSA members. If you haven't yet gotten around to joining the CHS PTSA, it's not too late -- say "yes" today by contacting Maribeth Eckenrode, PTSA membership chair, at maribetty@verizon.net, or by downloading the PTSA Membership Form
HERE. Thanks for saying "yes"!
