Information from Student Services

Course selection time is coming soon! During the week of January 12-16, 2009, counselors will meet with all ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students during Social Studies classes to begin the course registration process. This is the time of year where students receive the 2009-10 HCPSS Course Catalog, course registration sheets and other materials to prepare for next school year.

January 21st to 28th will be Signature Days. Students are required to have their teachers sign the recommended courses. Parents also need to sign. There will be a homeroom scheduled January 29th for students to turn in their completed signed schedule requests.

Speech and Debate team tournament - Bake Sale this Friday NEEDS your help!

This Saturday, January 10th, the Howard County Speech and Debate Teams will be hosting the BCFL #5 tournament in both CHS and BMMS buildings from 7am until 5pm.

The HCPSS Speech and Debate Teams will have a Bake Sale in the CHS & BMMS cafeterias to benefit travel to the National Tournaments this Spring in Albany, NY, and Birmingham, AL. Please consider baking and donating your specialty to assist our efforts. Bring any donations to Room 900 on Friday, 1/9/09.

As always, we also need JUDGES! Anyone can be a judge, a quick training is provided before the first round. Judges need to sign in by 8:30am and be available until about 3:30pm. If you are not scheduled for the 3rd round of competition, you may be finished earlier! Can't make it all day? We need volunteers at the Bake Sales, in the Boosters' Concession Stand and selling concessions/lunch at BMMS, too. Please use the attached form to indicate your level of assistance. Every effort, however large or small, is most appreciated.

The CHS Speech and Debate Team and I, along with all of the HCPSS Speech and Debate competitors and coaches and the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League thank you for your support and cooperation. Without schools willing to host these tournaments, our students would not have a place to use the skills they practice so diligently. John W. Scholarship information

Goddard Space Flight Center Education Programs: Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD) has set a goal of 50% minority participation among its highly competitive interns in its education programs. We seek help with summer intern programs. The main on-line application deadline for next summer is January 16, 2009. Our web based application (to the collection of programs) is at http://university.gsfc.nasa.gov/. It includes a list of over 100 project opportunities," for summer 2009, from which the applicant selects his or her favorites. The programs which cooperate in the process are described on the above cited web site. Students then apply for these projects. Hence, advisor support in recommending highly qualified students is most welcome. If you have questions, e-mail Janie.Nall@nasa.gov (  301-286-0885  ) or Terri Patterson at Terri.J.Patterson@nasa.gov (  301-286-4398  ). We very much appreciate your help by encouraging highly qualified students, especially minorities, to apply.

RE: Central Scholarship Bureau Central Scholarship Bureau is a private nonprofit organization that provides grants, scholarships, and interest-free loans to Maryland students attending college and vocational school. We have been in existence since 1924, and are supported by private donors and community foundations, including the France-Merrick Foundation and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. In the last two years, CSB has grown considerably. We now offer more than twenty scholarship and grant opportunities, and last year we awarded roughly $800,000 in interest-free, fee-free student loans. (Details on each of our programs can be found at our website, www.centralsb.org.) Our students are eligible to receive up to $10,000 per year to help them pursue their educational goals. In the current economic climate, our programs can go a long way toward helping Maryland students achieve their dreams of a college education. It is in that spirit, therefore, that we write to you to spread the word about CSB among Maryland’s high school students. Since high school career and counseling offices are often the first place a student is exposed to information on finding money to pay for college, we would like for CSB to be listed as a funding resource on your school’s website and/or newsletters. Also, if you would like brochures or other materials, we will be happy to accommodate you; simply contact us at  (410) 415-5558  or by e-mail at info@centralsb.org. We also provide e-mail updates for anyone who wishes to subscribe.

VRG Scholarships The VRG will again award $10,000 in college scholarships. Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we will give two $5,000 scholarships to graduating high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. The students must be graduating high school in spring 2009. The deadline is February 20, 2009. For more information or to read about past winners, go to [ http://www.vrg.org/student/scholar.htm ]. VRG Internships Responsibilities depend on background, major if in college, and interest of applicant. Tasks may include research, writing, and/or community outreach. Internships are helpful for students working toward journalism, English, and nutrition degrees. Business majors can obtain experience related to the business aspects of a non-profit organization. Activists can learn new skills and gain a broader knowledge, as well as share their expertise. Positions open throughout the year for all ages (including high school students living inBaltimore). Internships are unpaid. Send resume and cover letter to: The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463,Baltimore,MD 21203 vrg@vrg.org.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL THE BAKERS!!!

CHS PTSA Hospitality Committee presented the entire staff (teachers, office staff, custodians, bus drivers, etc.) with homemade cookies for the holiday on December 17th. We truly appreciate all those bakers who graciously donated such a wide variety of bake goods. We were able to distribute 184 presents. This great project could not have been so successful with out all of your effort. You really came through for us. “THANK YOU!” “HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR to our CHS family!” from the PTSA Hospitality Committee
