18 Howard County debaters travelled to the prestigious 2009 First and Second YearNational Championships in Debate at the Woodward Academy. This elite tournamentis debate's version of March madness with only the top private and public schoolsrepresented. On Friday evening, the tournament started with 72 teams. OnSaturday evening, the top 16 teams advanced to what is called elimination debates orin basketball the sweet 16.Just like Basketball usually sees the same tea ater year in the sweet 16 like NorthCarolina and University of Connecticut, debate usually only sees Greenhill inDallas, St. Marks of Dallas, Glenbrooks South of Chicago, Bronx Science of New York,or The Westminster School in Atlanta. BUT NOT THIS YEAR. 2 Cinderella teams from Howard County advanced to the sweet 16for the first time ever in second year debate: Centennial's Dan Li and JonathanKowarski advanced to the top 16 as 10th seed and Lan Mei and Abhik Pramanik advancedin as 15th seed! eams had to upset historic powerhouses such as the St. Marks,Dallas Jesuit, The Meadows School in Las Vegas! In 2 very close octafinal debates, Li and Kowarski lost to Glenbrook South and Meiand Pramanik lost to Mountain Brook of Alabama (who went onto be NationalChampions). Li and Kowarski finished as 10th ranked in the United States and Meiand Pramanik 15th ranked. Dan Li was awarded 9th overall speaker in the nation. The other 7 Howard County teams finished strong with 3-3 records. Wdebaters fromHoward High School, Glenelg, Mt. Hebron, River Hill, Centennial and Oakland Mills. This has been an exciting year for debate in Howard County. The previous weekend,Elisabeth McClure and Daniel Zhao of Glenelg finish 8th in the state of Marylandqualifying for the National Catholics Forensics League Championship in Albany onMemorial Day weekend. We have some outstanding graduating Seniors but at the same time we have phenomenaldebaters coming up from our middle school debate teams anter school league. Wehave 16 middle school students attending the national debate championships in SanAntonio Texas this year and we hope to bring home some gold there! We hope to continue to grow this tradition in Howard City!
