August 30 start date preferred
for 2010-11 school year

December 10 Public Hearing
 on Proposed 2010-2011 Academic Calendar

Because the majority of parents and Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) staff who responded to the HCPSS Academic Calendar Committee Survey preferred to have students begin the 2010-11 school year on Monday, August 30, 2010 (rather than on Monday, August 23), the Committee has decided to recommend the later date at the Board of Education meeting tomorrow. After it is presented to the Board, the proposed 2010-2011 academic calendar will be available for review on the HCPSS website. The Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed calendar on Thursday, December 10 and take action on January 14, 2010.

Survey results not only helped the Academic Calendar Committee gather input concerning the school start date regarding the relative "lateness" of next year's Labor Day holiday, but also informed responding parents and HCPSS staff that schools will be closed for a Primary and a General Election in 2010, which will extend the school year further so that the last day of school for students would be Wednesday, June 16, 2011 (a date without any inclement weather make-up days factored in).

Volunteers welcome for HCPSS Fine Arts special event

The Howard County Public School System's (HCPSS) Fine Arts Advisory Council invites all interested volunteers to attend its meeting on Monday, November 9 at 7 PM at the Faulkner Ridge Center, Columbia. You'll find out how you can help at the HCPSS Arts College Night special event on Monday, December 14.
